How Does Your 401k, IRA, and Certificates of Deposit Compare in Their Value to You?

What will your retirement account look like when you reach that age when it will be your only means of living? Well let me tell you, there is a surprising kick of reality when most people consider their final forecast for their retirement savings. In this article, we will compare the three scenarios mentioned in the title, and see how well they will each provide a retirement.

But lets ask a question, first. When you consider the long-term value of your retirement savings, does it look like you will have poor living conditions when you retire, or doe is look like you will be well off? Does it even look like you will be able to retire at all as you have planned?

With the current losses that have been imposed on those having a 401k, it becomes obvious that we need to use other means of securing a nest-egg for our golden years. And there are several options aside from having a 401k.

Considering the Advantages of a 401k
Concerning the 401k, the advantages are that we can have our money taken out pretax, while we are still in a larger tax bracket, and then withdraw the money at retirement when we are in a lower tax bracket. And to top it off, the company we work for may even match a certain percentage of our contributions.

But lets consider our 401k contributions a little further. To make it simple, if you make $50,000.00 a year and you contribute 3%, your total contributions for 30 years, that would be a grand total of $45,000.00 ($1,500.00 x 30). And if your company matches that, your total contributions for 30 years would be the total of $90,000.00 ($3,000.00 x 30). That is not a lot of money to retire on. And considering that you may be able to earn compound interest-if there are no great losses in the meantime-on that money, you can easily have over $100,000.00. But that is still not enough. The average person will probably need approximately $500,000.00 in the bank to have a descent retirement.

The Benefits of an IRA
The benefit of an IRA is that you can contribute your money after tax, and, therefore, you do not have to pay taxes on it when you retire, which can be a nice feature. But you need to remember that you will probably be in a lower tax-bracket when you retire. And so you are left with the choice to either not save the money because you do not want to pay the higher tax-which you will do anyway, if you do not save it-or you can save the money in a way that is not as good as earning interest on the non-taxed portion of your money, as your 401k does.

The Benefits of a CD
Another way to save money is a CD. And similar to a 401(k) plan, a CDs money is tied up. (However, it does guarantee a higher interest than you will get from a regular savings account.)

The Best Opportunity to Accumulate Money
But the best opportunity you can have is owning a home. If you own a home, or if you even purchase a home now, you can use the banks systems to pay your mortgage off in less than half the time. (That is better than the bi-weekly program.) Then you can begin to save the money you would have paid in your mortgage for more than 15 years and combine it with your 401k savings and earn interest on it instead of paying interest to the bank.

This will provide you several advantages. You will save tens of thousands of dollars in interest on your mortgage loan, after which you can then start saving what you would have paid to the bank in mortgage payments, and then you can even begin to contribute at least most of it in your 401k and gain compound interest on this money. This could quite possibly more than double your retirement savings. And to top it off, you will own your own home free and clear.

I hope you find this information helpful.

Who Performs Certified Court Reporting and What Are Their Credentials?

In novels and television dramas that feature the legal process, the stars of the courtroom are always attorneys and judges. But in real life, a courtroom that operates smoothly is the sum of its parts, including the court reporter. A court reporter is a trained member of the court who performs certified reporting, meaning that he or she records depositions and court hearings into official court transcripts that can be reviewed while a case is still being tried or after its conclusion for such purposes as petitioning for an appeal.

There are two kinds of court reporters: machine shorthand reporters and voice writing reporters. Machine shorthand allows the reporter to stay current with the flow of speech so that no words are missed. Voice writing, on the other hand, is when a reporter records verbatim what witnesses, attorneys, judges, etc. are saying.

Regardless of their reporting method, all court reporters initially follow the same basic academic path. In addition to focusing on the study of English, reporters also study legal language, medical language and business law. However, after completing the basic courses required for certified reporting, machine shorthand reporters and voice writing reporters pursue different areas of study to train for their specific requirements and duties. Voice writing reporters, for example, must be able to understand and use speech recognition engines and computer aided transcription.

Conversely, machine shorthand reporters require less technical areas of study and often attend certificate programs at private business schools. In most cases, both types of training require between two and four years of education that is followed by on-the-job training, after which both types of reporters typically become proficient in real-time reporting. Real time reporting occurs when a courthouse reporter records the language of court sessions for its online presentation while a deposition or court hearing is occurring. A large number of judges request that their reporter be proficient in real time reporting.

In addition to performing court reporting, many reporters also work as freelance reporters outside of the courtroom in situations that require the production of a legal transcript, such as certain types of political summits and corporate meetings and arbitration hearings. One of the newer arenas where court reporters are finding work is the legal services website industry, which is composed of online legal companies that provide, among other things, online and hard copy access to court transcripts.

In such situations, reporters are hired directly by the legal services provider in order that it might ensure the accuracy, clarity and overall quality of its transcripts. In most cases, the websites provide real time court reporting and require that their reporters be real time capable. In addition to providing basic transcripts, the websites also work with their reporters to produce transcripts that meet clients' specific requests.

Court reporters usually train in either machine shorthand reporting or voice writing reporting, recoding in different formats the language that occurs during depositions and court hearings. In addition to working for the court system, court reporters can also work for legal services websites that specialize in providing real time and other forms of court transcripts.

Historic Changes in the Dollar and Their Impact On Your Finances Today

Over the past 100 years there have been a lot of changes when it comes to the U.S. dollar. Unfortunately most of these changes have been for the worse from the standpoint of our well-being as average citizens.

In the old days our grandparents and their parents were used to conducting transactions using gold and silver coins as well as paper representative money substitutes such as silver certificates. If you are not familiar with silver or gold certificates they are merely notes that look very much like our modern 1, 5 and 20 dollar bills but the difference was that if you took them to the Treasury you could exchange them for a set weight of gold or silver.

The reason people trusted these paper substitutes in the first place was because you could exchange them for real money made of precious metals. Today we simply trust the dollar and the government that issues it more out of habit than out of any real value behind the currency.

The end for the dollar to gold exchange standard came for the average American in the year 1933 when the President at the time -FDR- mandated that all gold currency be called out of circulation and paper money replace it entirely. This was fairly easy to accomplish since people were already used to dealing in paper currency however it was a fateful step since the American people could no longer hold the government accountable for excessive inflation by turning their paper currency in for physical gold.

Foreign countries were able to continue exchanging dollars for gold up until 1971 when Nixon ended that practice. Silver currency stuck around a bit longer than gold since the last silver coins are marked 1964. Silver certificates stopped being exchanged for physical silver in 1968 and since that time it has been up to the individual to accumulate precious metals as savings on their own.

Today it seems quite important to revive interest in precious metals and currencies backed by precious metals. The Federal Reserve has created so many new dollar units that the value of our currency has fallen significantly and continues to do so. If you want to protect the savings you have in the bank from further devaluation you will have to take action since the rate of inflation is outpacing the rate of interest you receive on deposits.

To beat inflation you will have to invest or speculate in some way. One way is to buy safe stocks that pay good dividends. Oil companies are an example of this type of stock. You can also look into buying physical silver and gold in the form of coins or bullion. You can then store your metals in a safe place and track the trends in the price appreciation and inflation rates to determine when you should sell and move back into cash. This will likely be when the real rate of interest you can get on money in the bank returns to positive territory.

What Are CD's and Their Benefits?

Certificates of deposit, generally known as CDs, are monetary items that function slightly like a personal savings account yet using a much distinct timetable. CDs need an initial commitment in advance in a lump-sum down payment. The deposit is subsequently kept within the CD for a particular time frame. Throughout the period, the owner on the CD cannot take the cash out or add towards the level of cash which is in it. The cash remains within the CD through the entire term of the arranged time interval.

The quantity of interest the CD creates is generally determined by how lengthy the time interval is. The lengthier the time interval is, the greater the interest rate will usually be. Typically, you will find tiers of interest rates that need particular month or calendar year terms to make a greater interest amount. That will imply a 3 month period CD and a 6 month period CD may have the exact same interest rate however a full year CD may have a substantially greater one. The time interval of the CD might be as lengthy as 5 or even 10 years or perhaps as brief as one month or so.

A single draw of obtaining a CD is the cash is secure and will certainly be secured to the CD investor. They do not occur with the similar kinds of personal hazards that stock ventures usually do. Having CDs, the interest amount can do just one of two things to the consumer on the CD. The interest amount could be paid towards the investor the moment it's earned. The purchaser may then either take funds out from the CD or could move the principle funds into a brand new CD for a fresh time interval. The interest amount can even be rolled into your CD together using the theory so the interest rate will become enhanced.

An additional benefit of acquiring a CD is how the interest rates available in this kind of financial solution is usually greater compared to if the exact same quantity of cash was placed right into a bank account for that exact same time frame. To obtain a certificate of deposit, investors could go to a financial institution or a credit union. To obtain the greatest interest rates, look around and be prepared to do this every moment the CD matures when the cash is accessible so that you can make the most of the very best rates.

Self - Certification Mortgages and Their Desirability

A self-certification mortgage is basically a mortgage for those who cannot prove their income. Instead of proving their income borrowers state what their income is likely to be. A mortgage is then given on this basis. However a mortgage dealer may need evidence of accounts and bank statements to back up the claims, made by a potential borrower. Because of the risk attached in a self-certification mortgage they often attract a higher interest rates. Also to get a self-certification mortgage, it is usually necessary to give a bigger deposit. However if you can have put down a 25% deposit then the rates may become more competitive and only a little more expensive than a standard mortgage.

Self-Certification mortgages are good for those who are self employed and don't have a regular pay check going into the bank. It can also be good for those who have income from various sources and for different reasons find it difficult to prove their income. A self-certification mortgage is known as a non standard mortgage. The number of firms offering self-certification mortgages is increasing and as a result the market is becoming more competitive. Often a self-certification mortgage is used as a temporary measure to help get on the housing market. After a few years you can switch to a more standard mortgage deal with a better interest rate.

Investigation into Self Certification Mortgages by the FSA

A BBC programmer aired in 2003-2004 alleged that self-certification mortgages were being abused with borrowers encouraged to lie about their income in order to get a bigger mortgage. They also went on to say that these inflated incomes were a significant cause of the booming housing market.

The financial Services authority launched an investigation into the self-certification market partly because of these concerns. With high levels of borrowing to incomes borrowers were very susceptible to a rise in interest rates and a failure to keep up with their mortgage payments.

A summary of the self - certification market found that generally people did not overstate their income, although there were a small number of cases where this did occur. The report said that to a mystery shopper 3 out of 41 firms would consider exaggerating income to help get a mortgage. Since this report generally mortgage dealers have become more stringent in allowing inflated claims of income.

One interesting point they raised is that in several cases people who had no difficulty in proving their income were not advised to get a standard mortgage which would have been a better deal.

Summary

1. Self certification mortgages are good for those who stuggle to prove their income, especially self employed

2. Self certification mortgages can be a good way to get on the housing market ladder.

3. The market is becoming more competitive but generally if you can prove your income try get a standard mortgage first.

4. Be wary of exaggerating your income beyond reality. This can make it difficult to make payments in the future. You could be at risk of losing your home.

5. Mortgage dealers in self-certification markets have been advised by FSA to look more closely into financial situation of those applying to make sure claims sound credible.

6. See also fast track mortgages. Fast track mortgages are for those with a large deposit, in theory borrowers can be asked to prove income but often this is not the case.
